A compact but challenging 9 hole golf course hidden away in rural Barnsley with stunning view across the area.
Overview
Summary
A picturesque 9 hole course set across a series of formidable inclines.
A small but challenging 9 hole golf course
This course is a 2,174 yard Par 32 and the club says that this is one of the smallest golf courses in the country where players can obtain an official handicap! Its built on a hillside and also features a huge valley / gulley which comes into play across holes #1, #2 and #6 making these the most popular and challenging.
You do get the feeling of the compactness when playing this course but the design still offers plenty of fun and variations. It’s going to be exciting to see if there are going to be further changes to this course to offer more hazards to push the limits of skill towards the next level, holes #7 and #9 are ready and perfectly placed to start this expansion.
Hidden away in Wombwell, Barnsley
A Sat Nav is an absolute must to find this golf course as its nestled away in the back streets of Wombwell. The car park is adequate and the facilities are small but there is a bar area and on a summer’s day there is also options to sit and have a drink outside and watch golfers tee off from hole #1.
There are some small snacks and drinks available from the club shop, and there also looks like there are options to hire buggies but they do look limited on availability, so call ahead for confirmation.
A hole to remember
Hole #1 is a 294 Yard Par 4 and is the longest hole on this golf course. The tee box sits on an elevated position and it’s pretty much a straight drive as you can just see the green from this position. To the left and right are holes #2 and #9 so it’s essential for a good second shot to hit the ball straight.

This fairway is very forgiving as it’s about 60 foot wide with an abundance of small trees both left and right. There is a dip 3/4 of the way down which can tricky as it does slop down and form a gulley.

When you step onto this green you won’t believe just how big this really is. We would estimate that its around 60 foot from edge to edge and its maintained to a very high standard. The green is protected by a decent sized bunker to the front, then there is a 2 foot plateau across the back of the entire green.

More FORE shouted than ever yet still members of our group hit/almost hit multiple times. Good I guess if you're local and just want beers and a laugh.
Top tip. Don't even open the ball cleaners as the water inside was rancid!
Gets one of the stars for having a pool table.

Though the 9th is all up hill and the clubhouse is even further up than that
